Home Ground was proud to sponsor our most recent event, the 9/11 Responder Couples Communication weekend. This took place at Gurney’s Inn in Montauk on June 3rd to June 5th. Responders and their spouses spent the weekend learning and practicing communication skills under sunny skies next to the beautiful sea. Spouses had time to meet as a group to discuss and support each other’s efforts in maintaining family life while the responders met to talk about job stress and how to reach out to those colleagues who are affected by 9/11.
Couples commented that they were able to open up and express themselves to their spouse in ways they had not been able to before. The importance of being away from home and in a relaxing atmosphere in order to re-energize relationships and improve communication was very much in evidence on this beautiful weekend.
Future weekends will include the children of responder couples, as we reach out to assess the ways they have been affected by 9/11 as well.
All Home Ground weekend programs are free to participants. This one was made possible by a grant from the American Red Cross September 11th Recovery Fund.
